I, who thrive on responsibility and friendship, have the makings of an outstanding physician. A near straight-A student, I held several paid research internships and led a team to first place in a nationwide design contest. This semester, I won an unprecedented three national awards. nbsp; But my teachers and mates may be surprised to find that my greatest achievements come from outside the classroom. Four years ago, I lay in a hospital bed, with grave head injuries. A high school freshman, I was the lone casualty of a one-car accident. To this day, I do not know what happened, other than the fact that my head slammed through the drivers side window. For all I know, I may have swerved to avoid a deer. nbsp;†¦show more content†¦nbsp; I arrived at school ready to leave my accident behind. But that was not possible. Loathe admitting it, my injuries had left me with a learning disability. I had memory problems, read slowly, and often forgot the point of a sentence before reaching its conclusion. nbsp; One of my teachers, suggested I speak with Dean Robert Shaw, who assists students with learning disabilities. Shaw arranged for me to have extra time on exams and to use a crib sheet when acceptable to teachers. In Things Fall Apart, Okonkwo’s â€Å"whole life was dominated by his fear, the fear of failure and of weakness† (page 13). Achebe showed Okonkwo’s struggle with fear and strength throughout the novel. He was a great wrestler and warrior, and a great farmer of yams in Umofia. He was a hardworking and motivated man, unlike his father, who Okonkwo thought was lazy. Although the tribe viewed him as a strong and powerful leader, he struggled with inner fear. His life was dominated by fear. He lived in fear of being considered weak, being a failure, and being like his father. Although Okonkwo struggles with inner fear, he is also portrayed as a character with strength because he makes a living, supports his family, and is successful in his job. Chinua Achebe is proposing that strength is being superior to others without having to be violent, having titles, and not allowing fear to stop you from what you want to do. Okonkwo got his definition of what he considered to b e weak from his father, Unoka. His father was â€Å"lazy and improvident and was quite incapable of thinking about tomorrow† (Achebe, 4). Unoka borrowed money from many people and never paid them back and he did not even bring enough money in for his family to have enough food to eat and survive. They are also known for using a lot of plantains in their foods and dishes. It has been a very popular vacation destination for many people due to their low prices and their many all-inclusive resorts and hotels. Outside of those vacations spots, however lucks many dangers. The Dominican Republic is known for their rise in crime, specifically robberies. Even though both islands are beautiful and share the same waters, Puerto Ricans and Dominicans have had many issues against each other. For many Dominicans, they find offensive to be called Puerto Rican and vice versa. I think if they would sit and really think about it, they’d come to realize that our similarities are more than our differences and we should use that as a way to all get along a little better. Both Islands are predominantly Roman Catholic and Pentecostal, so the shared beliefs can help bring people together. In conclusion, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico has good and bad things about them. The Dominican Republic is known to be a melting pot of people from Spanish, French, African, Haitian and Taino descent and Puerto Rico is of Spanish, African, Taino and American descent. However the mix, we are all Latinos and both Islands are full of beauty and splendor. The battle of who has the better culture is pointless since both islands share similar dishes like mofongo, tostones, empanadillas, pasteles, bacalaitos, lechon, and sancocho. The dialect of Spanish used in Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic is also similar, where it is very common to drop the â€Å"S† in some words or to pronounce â€Å"R† as â€Å"L† in other words (Carne = Caln and Puerta = Puelta). Both also share GREAT music that keeps the parties going all night: Merengue, Salsa and Bachata. They may not be identical twins, but they are sister Islands.
